Frequently Asked Questions
For buyers
What is a commercial low-voltage contractor?
A commercial low-voltage contractor installs and services systems that run on low voltage (typically under 50 volts): structured data/voice cabling, fiber optics, access control, video surveillance, audio/visual, and similar building systems. They are distinct from electricians, who handle line-voltage power.
What is the difference between a low-voltage contractor and an electrician?
Electricians install line-voltage power and lighting. Low-voltage contractors specialize in communications and signal systems — network cabling, fiber, access control, and cameras. Many jurisdictions require a separate low-voltage or limited-energy license for this work, which is why it is worth hiring a specialist.
How much does a commercial structured cabling project cost?
It varies by region, building, and spec, but installed Cat6 cabling commonly runs about $150–$350 per drop, access control roughly $1,500–$4,000 per door, and IP cameras about $500–$1,500 each. Occupied retrofits, higher cable categories, and certification requirements push costs up. Always get itemized quotes.
How do I find a certified installer in my area?
Browse the directory by state and city to see commercial low-voltage contractors serving your metro, or post your project and have it routed to certified installers in your area for quotes.
Is it free to post a project?
Yes. Posting a project is free for buyers. Your project is routed to featured contractors in your metro who can reach out with bids.
